Happiness and Heartbreak focuses on the experience of business owners and uncovers many key findings including:

  • 1 in 4 business owners are ‘currently’ being asked to provide personal guarantees to support their business
  • Only 14% of business owners felt the VAT reduction had helped their business
  • 68% of business owners have avoided making redundancies in the past year

    It looks like tough times ahead. We can only hope that the tax changes will be business friendly and that finally we might get rid of some of the government red tape.

    The section on training is very interesting – it does beg the question, what courses should universities offer to entrepreneurs.

    I love working for myself; but as the survey shows there is just too much reliance on ‘business’ to sort out tax collecting, social issues and so much else. And nobody is listening to this.

    This is a good survey that tells it like it is. Whatever the politicians tell you, the banks aren’t lending and they’re squeezing smaller businesses to pay for their own mess.

    I think this report shows that Government are doing little that actually does help private businesses. Too much legislation gets in the way of us running our businesses day to day. The only reason we have survived the recession is down to the experience and skill of the owners of these businesses.
